TPO 32 Independent Writing

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

Because the world is changing so quickly, people now are less happy or less satisfied with their lives than people were in the past.

Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

Sample Answer:

It is my belief that as a result of the rapidly changing world, people are less happy and satisfied with their lives then they were in the past.

First of all, people are less satisfied with their work environment. Dramatic social transformation has lead to a great increase in the stress which people find in their work lives. Today’s jobs have much higher demands than in the past, requiring a much higher skill set and greater capability to accept rapid change. There is constant pressure to deliver results, with little time to relax between projects. Consequently the majority of people are unable to detach themselves from the stress of their environment, making happiness difficult to achieve.

Second, modern society suffers from a poor environment. Brought about by fast industrialization, today’s skies are no longer blue skies filled with fresh pure air. In fact, skies are grey and the air is dirty, causing respiratory problems. This is particularly note worthy in high density cities, for example Beijing, China, where heavy smog has not only caused serious traffic accidents but also put its citizens into a hazardous and depressing environment. Given this poor environment, how can people feel happy and satisfied?

Lastly, it seems society itself has developed into a material world where most people focus purely on satisfying their own greed. This is easily seen when taking a glimpse at the flourishing luxury industry and watching consumer behaviors. The pursuit of cars, jewels, mansions, etc. has become the focus of life. People have such great focus on working to gain material satisfaction, they are willing to give up their youth and happiness to achieve it.

In conclusion, the quickly changing world negatively affects all aspects of life including: work, environment, and personal aspects. Through an increase in stress and a focus on both growth and wealth, people are bound to have a less happy and satisfied life compared generations in the past.
