AEIS语法笔记：reason that还是reason why？

在备考AEIS考试中大家应该在积累语法知识的同时，对所学过的语法知识进行系统梳理，才能够事半功倍。英语中有个著名的句型the reason why…is…（…的理由是…），但有同学提出，在某些地方看到 the reason that…is…好像也可以。那么 reason 后面的从句用 that 引导还是 why 引导？

先看这个句子，思考一下，空格里应填入 that 还是 why？

The reason ____ she dropped out of school is that she didn’t want to increase the family’s financial burden.

她辍学的原因是因为她不想给家里增加经济负担。

答案一会儿公布，先看一下 that 和 why 的原理：

1. the reason that 后接具体原因，that 实际上引导了一个同位语从句，说明了reason 的内容。比如：

The reason that he got stuck in the traffic is so bad.

那个他堵在路上的理由太烂了。

说明：“(that) he got stuck in the traffic”正是这个 reason的内容，他正是用“堵在路上”作为他的理由，不过句子后面说这个理由比较烂。

2. the reason why后接对这个理由的修饰，why实际上引导了一个定语从句。比如：

The reason why he was late is that he got stuck in the traffic.

他迟到的原因是他堵在路上了。

说明：“(why) he was late”并不是这个 reason的内容，而是对 reason 的修饰，翻译为“他迟到的那个理由”，这个理由的内容是什么呢？就是后面 “is that he got stuck in the traffic”（他堵在路上）。

再回到上面的思考题：

The reason ____ she dropped out of school is that she didn’t want to increase the family’s financial burden.

她辍学的原因是因为她不想给家里增加经济负担。

这里“she dropped out of school”并不是这个 reason 的内容对吗？只是对 reason 的修饰，所以应该用 why 引导，空格中填入 why，你做对了吗？

最后补充一种情况：

reason 后面跟的定语从句如果缺了主语或宾语，那么是不能用 why 引导的，须用 that（或which）引导：

He gave us a reason that seemed to beworkable.

他给了我们一条看似可行的理由。（定语从句缺主语，要用 that 或 which 引导）

Could you tell me the reason that he gave you yesterday?

能告诉我他昨天给你的那条理由吗（定语从句却宾语，要用 that或 which 引导，或者可省略引导词）。
