今天我们就以难度系数最高的诗歌为例，具体讲一下以诗歌为例来看看SSAT阅读考察的能力是什么?诗歌作为传达诗人情感思想的文章，首先要抓住的就是诗歌的意境，给读者什么样的感觉，例如一首悲伤的诗通常以暗色调的颜色表达，而快乐的诗则会用明亮的颜色，除了色彩外，我们还可以通过形容词、动词和有代表性的名词迅速地对诗歌意境做出推断。

在下面这首诗中我们提取出rude, embattled , fired the shot , foe conqueror , ruin , dark, memory , hero能推出这首诗描述的是严肃的战争、缅怀英雄的场景。

By the rude bridge that arched the flood,

Their flag to April’s breeze unfurled,

Here once the embattled farmers stood

And fired the shot heard round the world.

The foe long since in silence slept;

Alike the conqueror silent sleeps;

And Time the ruined bridge has swept

Down the dark stream which seaward creeps.

读出了主旨后我们就能很快地完成下面的两个题目，选项中只要意思最贴近“战争”及“缅怀英雄”的就是我们的正确答案，分别为(B)(C)

然而，在实际教学中，很多学生会将第二题误选成E选项，因为E选项确实有“纪念”的意思，这里我们只要将B和E相比较就会发现，E在意思上比B来的广，而原诗中仅仅再说“缅怀战场上的英雄”,也就是B选项里的soldiers(士兵)，因此B更加贴近诗人要表达的意思。

不过，有时做题时我们会发现诗并没有太强烈的感情流露，可能仅仅以抽象的方式在述说某个具体的东西让我们不能够快速地读出主旨，这就是SSAT考官在诗歌上增加难度的方法，针对这类的诗歌我们仅需读出诗人想述说的东西，然后回到题目中选择与原句语境中表达最接近的选项即可

On which we strew

Petal by petal the flower of our heart;

The end lost in dream,

They float past our view,

We only watch their glad, early start.

Freighted with hope,

Crimsoned with joy,

We scatter the leaves of our opening rose;
