例如:

lie ahead 即将来临,即将发生,在前面
例如:

(has/have) a sting in the tail If something, such as a story or joke, has a sting in the/its tail, it has a surprising or unpleasant part which only becomes clear at the end.(故事、笑话等)结局出人意料,结尾煞风景
例如:

到此拍卖会出现一个意料之外的结果。
turn sth upside down 倒置,颠倒(事实/黑白)
例如:
If youturn the envelope upside down, the key will fall out.
你如果把信封倒过来,钥匙就会掉出。
At times they go so far as to confound right and wrong and turn things upside down.
他们有时简直要闹到颠倒是非、混淆黑白的程度。
原型是 are not normal times 即 非常时期,非平时
例如:

(be) under no illusions 不抱有任何幻想
例如:

heavy toll 沉重代价,大量伤亡,重大损失
例如:
That battle took a heavy toll of the Taiping troops for they were attacked front and rear.
那次战役太平军因腹背受敌,伤亡惨重。
