任何语言类的考试，没有基础词汇的积累，一切解题技巧就都失去了依托。即使是根据上下文语境推测出生词的意思，也需要学生具备一定的词汇量基础才能完成。下面就和小编一起看看今天PTE高频词汇讲解吧。

corner

v.垄断（某种商品的）市场

英英释义：

If a company or place corners an area of trade, they gain control over it so that no one else can have any success in that area.

例句：

①They've been trying to corner the market by buying up all the wheat in sight.

他们想把所有能得到的小麦都买下来以垄断市场。

②Whether they will corner the market in graphics software remains to be seen. 

还不清楚他们是否要垄断制图软件市场。

拓展：

corner作此义讲时，一般用在经济领域，比较常见的搭配是corner the market

与之意思相近的短语还有：have a monopoly on sth

除此之外，corner作为动词还有两个比较常见的熟词生义：

第一个意思表示“硬要走近想与(某人)说话”

If you corner someone, you force them to speak to you when they have been trying to avoid you.

例如：

I found myself cornered by her on the stairs.

第二个意思比较形象，中文释义是“使……落入圈套”

If you corner a person or animal, you force them into a place they cannot escape from.

doctor

v.篡改，伪造

英英释义：

If someone doctors something, they change it in order to deceive people.

“doctor”作此义的用法很常见，在很多美剧和外刊中都有出现，它常见的搭配是tape, photo,video等。

除此之外，doctor作为动词还有一个比较少见的意思----“将有害物掺进（食物或饮料）中”

If someone doctors food or drink, they add a poison or drug to it.

例如：

She had no doubt that it was he who had doctored her milk.

said

adj.先前提到的

英英释义：

used before the name of a person or thing you have already mentioned.

例句：

①But what is the importance of the said gentleman?

②It seems likely that said person has committed similar offenses in the past.

③The said Joseph Brown was seen outside the house on the night of January 15th.

拓展：

“said”在这里是有意义的词，它不仅仅是“say”的过去式，也可以表示“先前提到的”，相当于“aforementioned”

retire

v.就寝，睡觉

英英释义：

When you retire, you go to bed.

例句：

①She retires early most nights, exhausted.

②Some time after midnight, he retired to bed.

拓展：

这里补充两个与“睡觉”相关的短/俚语，它们都是informal的用法：

①turn in

When you turn in, you go to bed.

例如：

Would you like some tea before you turn in?

②hit the sack/hay

除此之外，retire还有一个比较少见的意思，表示“撤退”

to remove from a battle after being defeated.

flame

n.强烈的感情，激情

英英释义：

You can refer to a feeling of passion or anger as a flame of passion or a flame of anger.

例句：

拓展：

这里补充一个短语“old flame”（旧情人，旧欢）

An old flame is someone with whom you once had a romantic relationship.

例句：

Sue was seen dating an old flame.
