用来进行比较：

指事情以同样的方式发生
Do as your parents told you.

当…时，随着（连词）
用来表达时间关系
Dad looked sad and worried as he read the letter.
爸爸读这封信时显得又伤心又担心。
As you approach the town, you'll see the college on the left.

Wise men become wiser as they grow older, ignorant men more ignorant.

when，as，while表示“当…时”常常可以互换
as同时（或前后几乎）发生（可以是短暂性动词）
while同时进行（一定是延续性动词）

用来表达因果关系
I went to bed early, as I was knackered.
我很早就上床睡觉了，因为我累坏了。
He didn't mention it as he didn't want to worry you.
他没提因为他不想让你担心。
He couldn't come as he had an appointment.
他不能来，因为他有个约会。
as, because和since区别:
because最常见，它表示的是导致一个结果的真正原因。
He cried because he had hurt his knee.
他哭是因为他的膝盖受伤了。
I left because you never asked me to stay.
我离开是因为你没让我留下。
I do it because I like it.
我这么做是因为我喜欢。
as和since用的相对少些，而且用它们时，我们更强调结果，原因是大家众所周知的事实，since比as正式。
Since you're tired, let's stay at home.

They could not afford the house since they were not earning enough.

用来表达让步关系
Ridiculous as it seems, it happens.
这样的事看似荒唐，但常发生。

as是although和while的同义词，但要用倒装句。
像，如同；作为，当作（介词）
Our company has targeted career women as our primary customers.
我们公司以职业女性为主要客户。
Matthew was wrongly diagnosed as having a brain tumour.
马修被误诊为脑瘤。
He has become celebrated as an artist.
他已成为著名的艺术家。
He is cunning as a fox.
他狡猾得像只狐狸。（like也可以）
as表示“像，如同”，基本有在一些固定的搭配中，像上一句的cunning as a fox，所以我们平时用like表达“像，如同”，like不是真的 “作为”：
正如，和…一样（连词，关系代词）
引导特殊句型
The earth travels around the sun, as everyone knows.
众所周知，地球绕着太阳转。
（as指代The earth travels around the sun）
When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
入乡随俗。（在罗马时，要像罗马人一样。）
A friend is, as it were, a second self.
可以说，朋友是另一个自我。
（as it were =as one might/could say；as 指代A friend is a second self.）
